Dating Dos and Don’ts

Most people approach first dates with a mixture of excitement and nerves. To help you successfully steer your way through that all important first meeting, here at Online Dating UK we have created a list of dating dos and don’ts.

Do...

Choose the date venue with care
The venue for a date can determine the success or failure of an evening. Aim to pick somewhere that is not too busy or too noisy. Think about the kind of place that may appeal to your date. First dates should be kept relatively short so book a restaurant where you can have a light bite rather than committing to a formal dining experience. This will enable you to cut the date short, without embarrassment, if it is not going well.

Take time over your appearance
It’s important to make an effort with regards to the way you dress for a first date. If you arrive wearing ripped jeans and a tatty t-shirt your date will perceive this as you not caring about the evening and, by extension, about them.

Spend equal time talking and listening
At Online Dating UK we appreciate many people talk too much when they are nervous, but remember it is vital to both talk and listen on a first date. If your date is shy encourage them to talk by asking lots of questions.

Show you are engaged
A great deal of communication is non-verbal. Demonstrate to your date you are engaged by making eye contact regularly, nodding and smiling lots.

Switch your phone off or onto silent
There is nothing worse than having dinner with someone who is constantly checking their phone, sending text messages and answering calls. Give your date your full attention.

Don’t...

Arrive late
Arriving late is disrespectful and likely to make your date feel unimportant. If you are unavoidably detained you should let your date know and be sure to apologise when you do arrive.

Forget your manners
Poor manners can leave a lasting bad impression. Remember to be polite to waiting staff and bartenders on your date.

Bring your emotional baggage to dinner
Everyone has a certain amount of baggage, but your first date is not the right forum for sharing this information. Think of your first date as a job interview and put your best self forward.

Talk about other dates
You may have many good and bad dating stories to tell, but your first date is not the time to discuss these as it is liable to make your date feel unimportant.

Talk about controversial subjects
There are certain subjects that will elicit a strong response from most people, for example religion or politics. It is always safest to avoid these subjects on a first date.

We hope you enjoy using Online Dating UK and that your next first date is a successful one!
